The elements are line, shapes, form, value (light), color, texture, and space. everything breaks down to simple shapes in relation to each other, together they make a silhouette,
The Principles are balance, Emphasis, movement and expression.
Everything we can see or wish to see is dependant on these modalities.
I'll ask myself what the alien most represents in our world, in most cases it will fall under animals and insects combined with the anatomy of my choosing. Once I have established the visual cues, I gather reference and begin the selecting my key ELEMENTS, then I apply the PRINCIPLES and viola, realistic aliens/vehicles/animals/architecture etc.
Try this exercise. Take an Ostrich, alligator, and a python, apply selected elements from each of these to the human figure, or another principle of motion/MOVEMENT/anatomy and based on what kind of character you want, what you would like to EXPRESS, seek to BALANCE and EMPHASIZE selected ELEMENTS(line, shapes, form, value (light), color, texture, and space) to reach the desired EXPRESSION of character you want.
This is how I visualize what does not exist in a way that it can exist in our world today. Hope this helps.
